Do Not Judge

7:1 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged. ¹ 

Matius 12:34-36

12:34 Offspring of vipers! How are you able to say anything good, since you are evil? For the mouth speaks from what fills the heart. 12:35 The good person ²  brings good things out of his ³  good treasury, ⁴  and the evil person brings evil things out of his evil treasury. 12:36 I ⁵  tell you that on the day of judgment, people will give an account for every worthless word they speak.

Matius 15:11

15:11 What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth; it is what ⁶  comes out of the mouth that defiles a person.”

Matius 15:17-18

15:17 Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and then passes out into the sewer? ⁷  15:18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a person.

[7:1]  ¹ sn The point of the statement do not judge so that you will not be judged is that the standards we apply to others God applies to us. The passive verbs in this verse look to God’s action.

[12:35]  ² tn The Greek text reads here ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpos). The term is generic referring to any person.

[12:35]  ³ tn Grk “the”; the Greek article has been translated here and in the following clause (“his evil treasury”) as a possessive pronoun (ExSyn 215).

[12:35]  ⁴ sn The treasury here is a metaphorical reference to a person’s heart (cf. BDAG 456 s.v. θησαυρός 1.b and the parallel passage in Luke 6:45).

[12:36]  ⁵ tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

[15:11]  ⁶ tn Grk “but what.”

[15:17]  ⁷ tn Or “into the latrine.”
